Inspired by: Midnight in Paris
Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris is nothing short of a dazzling delight of a film. Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams respectively play Gil and Ines, an engaged couple who take a vacation to the City of Lights. Gil, a seasoned romantic endlessly waxes poetic about Paris in the twenties with its magical flourishing of art and literature while Ines impatiently chides him for “living in a fantasy.” Costume designer Sonia Grande takes the viewer into a fashion fantasy, clothing Ines in clean and crisp summery designs that are fresh and luxurious, like a glamourous tweed jacket layered with a basic tee and jeans, or an effortless shirtdress belted at the hip.

However, as the movie takes a mysterious turn into the bygone era that Gil so wishes to live in, the costumes become more and more dazzling. Marion Cotillard’s Adriana is lovely in heavily beaded, fluidly draped, and intricately embellished drop waist flapper dresses that are as enchantingly beautiful as her character. Sonia Grande noted that she endlessly scoured antique shops in order to source the heavenly wardrobe for Ariana. Grande’s commitment to finding pitch perfect period pieces for the film definitely shows in the gorgeous costumes that fill the film.
